About the Port

Port of Darwin — Australia's Northern Gateway

The Port of Darwin is Australia's northernmost capital-city port and the closest Australian port to Asia. It sits at East Arm, about 20 kilometres east of the Darwin CBD, and handles over 100,000 TEU per year — small by national standards, but strategically important because of its proximity to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and China are all a short sea leg away).

The port has a single dedicated container terminal, operated by Darwin Port (a Chinese-linked private operator under a 99-year lease from the NT Government since 2015). The terminal handles container, bulk, and general cargo, and is a key supply line for the Northern Territory's mining, oil & gas, and defence sectors — including the INPEX Ichthys LNG project and the Australian Defence Force's northern bases.

Darwin's climate creates a distinctive logistics challenge: the wet season (roughly November to April) brings cyclones, flooding, and road closures that can cut off overland freight routes. This means containers arriving at Darwin often need to be moved quickly during the dry season, and planning around the wet season is a genuine operational specialty.

We operate out of the Port of Darwin. Our drivers know the East Arm terminal, the empty container parks at East Arm and Wishart, and the fastest routes to mining sites, defence bases, and remote communities across the NT and northern WA — including the long-haul route south to Alice Springs and the Adelaide corridor.

Got Questions?

Port of Darwin FAQ

Quick answers to common questions about container transport from the Port of Darwin.

Which container terminal operates at the Port of Darwin?

The Port of Darwin has a single dedicated container terminal at East Arm, operated by Darwin Port — a private operator under a 99-year lease from the Northern Territory Government (since 2015). The terminal handles container, bulk, and general cargo, and is the primary supply line for the NT's mining, oil & gas, and defence sectors. Single-terminal setup makes operational planning simpler but means capacity is tighter during peak periods.

How long does container pickup from the Port of Darwin take?

Typical terminal turnaround is 30–45 minutes from arrival at the gate to exit with the container loaded. Darwin's terminal is fast because volume is lower than the eastern-state ports and the road to East Arm is not congested. Peak hours are 7–10am and 3–6pm. We book truck slots in advance to avoid the worst windows.

Do you clear customs at the Port of Darwin?

Yes. We lodge customs declarations with the Australian Border Force (ABF) for cargo arriving at the Port of Darwin, and coordinate any DAFF biosecurity inspection or fumigation required. Because we clear and haul under one provider, your container goes from clearance directly onto the truck — no gap between the broker releasing it and a separate trucking company picking it up. This matters especially for mining and oil & gas cargo where site schedules are tight.

Where are the empty container parks near the Port of Darwin?

Empty container parks (ECPs) serving the Port of Darwin are located at East Arm and Wishart. Which park you return to depends on the shipping line's designated depot for that container. The NT has very few ECPs compared to the eastern states, so knowing each line's preference is critical — a wrong return can mean hundreds of kilometres of deadhead driving. We plan the return leg accordingly, avoiding the wasted trips that cause detention fees.

How does the wet season affect container transport from Darwin?

The wet season (roughly November to April) brings cyclones, flooding, and road closures that can cut off overland freight routes — particularly the Central Arnhem Road to Nhulunbuy (Gove) and unsealed roads to remote communities. The Stuart Highway south to Katherine and Alice Springs usually stays open, but temporary closures are common during major weather events. We monitor road conditions daily during the wet season and either re-route, delay, or arrange barge alternatives where appropriate.

Do you handle Groote Eylandt and other barge-only destinations?

Yes. Groote Eylandt has no road access from mainland Australia — containers must travel by barge from Darwin or Nhulunbuy. The same applies to several remote island communities in the NT and Kimberley. We coordinate the barge booking, handle the road leg on both ends (port to barge, barge to site), and provide a single quote and single point of contact for the full journey. This is one of the more specialist services we offer in the NT.

How much does container transport from the Port of Darwin cost?

Indicative rates: Port of Darwin to Darwin metro ~$300–$450 for a 20ft, ~$400–$600 for a 40ft. Port of Darwin to Katherine ~$700–$1,000. Port of Darwin to Alice Springs ~$2,000–$3,000. Port of Darwin to Nhulunbuy (Gove) ~$3,000–$5,000 (seasonal — wet season can be significantly higher). Port of Darwin to Groote Eylandt ~$3,500–$5,500 (barge required). These are typical ranges — exact prices depend on container size, delivery address, equipment type, season, and current port fees. Contact us for a firm quote within 2–4 business hours.
Why Crest

Why Choose Crest for the Port of Darwin

Remote logistics experience, one provider, one point of contact from port to site.

Remote Logistics Experience

Mining camps, defence bases, and remote communities require different logistics than metro deliveries. We know the routes, the seasonal constraints, and the site protocols.

Wet Season Planning

We plan around the wet season, not against it. Road closures, barge schedules, and weather delays are factored in from the quote stage — not discovered mid-transit.

Empty Return Included

Delivery + empty container return in one quote. In the NT — where the nearest empty park can be hundreds of kilometres away — getting this right the first time matters.
