About the Port

Port of Fremantle — Western Australia's Principal Container Port

The Port of Fremantle is Western Australia's principal container port and the country's fourth-largest container port by volume, handling over 800,000 TEU per year. It sits at the mouth of the Swan River, about 15 kilometres south-west of the Perth CBD, and is operated by Fremantle Ports (a Western Australian government trading enterprise).

The port has two dedicated container terminals: the Inner Harbour (North Quay) and the Outer Harbour at Kwinana. The Inner Harbour handles most of the container traffic and sits closest to Fremantle's historic centre. Both terminals have their own truck slot systems and container release processes.

Fremantle's role in WA is different from what you see in Sydney or Melbourne. Because WA is isolated from the eastern states, the port is the primary import gateway for the entire state — including the Pilbara mining operations, the South West agricultural region, and the Perth metropolitan area. That means Fremantle handles a much wider range of cargo than a typical container port: everything from consumer goods to mining equipment and industrial supplies.

We operate daily out of Fremantle. Our drivers know both terminals, the empty container parks at Fremantle, Kwinana, and Perth Airport, and the fastest routes to every industrial precinct across Perth and regional WA — including the long-haul routes north to the Pilbara and south to the South West.

Got Questions?

Port of Fremantle FAQ

Quick answers to common questions about container transport from the Port of Fremantle.

Which container terminals operate at the Port of Fremantle?

The Port of Fremantle has two dedicated container terminals: the Inner Harbour (North Quay) in Fremantle itself, and the Outer Harbour at Kwinana, about 20 km south. The Inner Harbour handles the majority of container traffic and sits closest to Perth. Both terminals have their own truck slot booking systems and container release processes. We work with both and know their respective congestion patterns.

How long does container pickup from the Port of Fremantle take?

Typical terminal turnaround is 30–50 minutes from arrival at the gate to exit with the container loaded. Fremantle's terminals are generally faster than eastern-state ports because the road network to the port is less congested and volume is lower. Peak hours are 7–10am and 3–6pm — we book truck slots in advance to avoid the worst windows.

Do you clear customs at the Port of Fremantle?

Yes. We lodge customs declarations with the Australian Border Force (ABF) for cargo arriving at the Port of Fremantle, and coordinate any DAFF biosecurity inspection or fumigation required. Because we clear and haul under one provider, your container goes from clearance directly onto the truck — no gap between the broker releasing it and a separate trucking company picking it up.

Where are the empty container parks near the Port of Fremantle?

Empty container parks (ECPs) serving the Port of Fremantle are located at Fremantle, Kwinana, and near Perth Airport. Which park you return to depends on the shipping line's designated depot for that container. WA has fewer ECPs than the eastern states, so knowing each line's preference saves significant deadhead time. We plan the return leg accordingly — avoiding the wasted trips that cause detention fees.

Do you handle Pilbara-bound containers from Fremantle?

Yes — this is one of our most important WA lanes. Containers arriving at Fremantle for Pilbara mining operations are typically cleared at the port, then linehauled north via the Great Northern Highway to Port Hedland, Karratha, Newman, or Tom Price. Transit time is 2–3 days depending on the final destination. We handle the full journey: port pickup, clearance, linehaul, site delivery, and empty return to the nearest container park.

How much does container transport from the Port of Fremantle cost?

Indicative rates: Port of Fremantle to Perth metro ~$350–$500 for a 20ft, ~$450–$650 for a 40ft. Port of Fremantle to Kwinana ~$300–$450. Port of Fremantle to Bunbury ~$600–$850. Port of Fremantle to Port Hedland ~$2,500–$4,000 (long-haul to Pilbara). Port of Fremantle to Adelaide ~$1,800–$2,500 (interstate linehaul). These are typical ranges — exact prices depend on container size, delivery address, equipment type, and current port fees. Contact us for a firm quote within 2–4 business hours.
