Overview

What Is Container Haulage?

Container haulage is the road leg of the import/export chain. It's the service that picks up a shipping container from the port terminal, delivers it to your warehouse or site, and returns the empty container to the port (or to an empty container park) once you've unloaded it.

Without haulage, cargo would sit at the port forever. Freight forwarding gets your goods to Australia. Road transport gets them from the port to your door — and back again, which is the part most people forget about until detention fees start stacking up.

At Crest Logistics, container haulage is our core business. We operate eight specialised transport types, so we can handle any container that comes through any Australian port — standard, oversized, heavy, refrigerated, or hazardous.

  • 1 Container released by shipping line and customs

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between container haulage and road transport?

In Australia, the two are often used interchangeably. Technically, "haulage" means moving containers by road from port to premises. "Road transport" is the broader category that includes haulage plus intrastate/interstate linehaul and general freight. For our purposes: container haulage is what we do, and it's a subset of road transport.

How long does container haulage take from Port Botany to Western Sydney?

Typically 1–2 hours in transit, depending on traffic and the exact delivery address. Peak-hour travel can extend this to 2.5 hours. When we quote, we give a specific pickup window and estimated delivery time — not a vague "sometime today."

Who is responsible for returning the empty container to the port?

With Crest Logistics, we handle it. Our quote covers delivery to your site AND empty return to the port or empty container park. You don't need to separately book a return truck — the empty collection is included in the same service window. This is different from most haulage providers, who leave the empty return to you.

What is detention time and how does it work?

Shipping lines give you a fixed "free time" to pick up, unload, and return the container — usually 3–5 days. After that, detention fees apply daily. Detention is a charge from the shipping line, not from us. We structure our service to help you avoid it: quick turnaround, and empty return booked in the same window as delivery.

Can you handle oversized or overweight containers?

Yes. We operate specialised equipment for overweight and out-of-gauge containers — multi-axle configurations, low-loaders, and full permit/escort coordination. If your container exceeds standard road limits, we handle the compliance work before the truck moves.
